DYSLEXIA TUTORING

Path Learning uses the Orton-Gillingham approach (also known as Structured Literacy) for dyslexic students who are struggling with reading, writing and spelling. Educators have been using this method since the 1930s, it is supported by scientific evidence, and can be used to teach nearly any student to read and spell. The specific program I use is the Barton Reading and Spelling System in which I am certified at the advanced level.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING CLASSES

Path Learning currently offers a class for improving Executive Functioning skills. This class is held 2-3 times during the year and is generally 6 sessions. This class will help students to plan for events, get better at removing procrastination, meet deadlines, set long term goals, and manage time.

SCREENINGS

Path Learning offers screening for dyslexia. This screening utilizes a battery of 11 tests to determine if you fit the profile of dyslexia. You will receive a written report discussing the results of the screening and offering recommendations on what to focus on next in your journey and how best to help with dyslexia.

BIOGRAPHY

Eight years ago, I had a struggling reader in my home. My son was in 4th grade and had been a struggling reader since the moment the schools started teaching him to read. Every year I would ask what the teachers and reading specialists thought about his inability to pick up on reading and I was told every year that one day he would just get it. In 4th grade you can’t just wait for reading to take hold anymore. As I watched his classmates excel and pass him by, I became more and more worried for him.
Then a friend told me about the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Through doing research on dyslexia, and Barton, I found that everything fit my son. I then realized what none of the teachers and reading specialists did. My son was dyslexic. I immediately started tutoring him. I also started learning as much as I could about dyslexia. I attended as many trainings and lectures as I could and became a certified Barton tutor.
Being a parent of a dyslexic and someone who also has dyslexia I am allowed a unique insight. Tutoring was not easy for me in the beginning. I also had to learn along with my students (I was a horrible speller). When I first started, I was working with many high school students and the trauma was rampant amongst them. I recognized this trauma as the same trauma I had experienced as a young student. As I tutor, I am not just teaching these kids to read and spell, I am also helping them to deal with the trauma they are experiencing surrounding their disability by letting them know that they are not alone. I get it. I now tutor all ages and I love it. I am so glad tutoring stumbled into my life. I get so much joy out of teaching my like-minded students and I hope to be able to do it for a very long time.

TESTIMONIALS

Michon is great. She truly wants what is best for the kids and is focused on their needs. I have referred people to her and they have been very appreciative
and more than satisfied. If you have questions about dyslexia get a hold of her.

Steele Bailey

Michon Silaphath is great! It had never crossed my mind that my son, who struggled for years with reading, had dyslexia. One day I met her and that changed everything. I was able to learn about the Barton Reading and Spelling System and use it with my son myself since I homeschool. He is now in 10th grade and can do almost all his school work independently now.

Amy Long

Michon is a skilled and wonderful person and great at what she does. If you “think “ you or a loved one,
have or is currently struggling with any reading or spelling difficulty, then you should definitely give her a
call.
